Growth, Milestones, Trends
It has been almost another year, and our community has grown significantly, now involving carbon experts from over 200 organizations, representing a very broad range of climate and carbon sectors, from Directors of major Government Agencies to Executives of major international companies.
We exceeded 1,500 followers on LinkedIn, a modest but significant step to projecting positive influence on the global professional climate and carbon community.
We organized 8 Conference sessions, participated in 12 conferences and 3 workshops, published 2 technical and 14 conference publications, met with over 100 climate and carbon startups, investor groups, and regulators, and presented several dozens of presentations explaining the value and importance of direct flux measurements for establishing modern Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MMRV) system, and developing equitable, just, and working carbon market, effective in reducing greenhouse gasses (GHGs).
We also noticed a definite shift in policies, public outreach, and marketing positioning by various stakeholders, moving from modeling and approximation in the carbon market and natural climate solutions to incorporating more direct measurements.
These range from seminal publications (example 1, example 2, example 3, example 4), to government guidelines and projects (example 1, example 2, example 3), and corporate adoptions (example 1, example 2, example 3). And many of you have been integral to these efforts!
We thank all of you very much for helping with all of our activities as well, dedicating your precious time and valuable expertise, and for the many interesting and useful discussions on the mailing list, especially in private.
There is definitely a way to resolve climate and carbon issues by working together across domains, sectors, and isles, and it seems to start working, slowly but surely!
Thank you!
Stefan and George, CarbonDew Founders.

Shape Future CarbonDew Community Activities!
As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the CarbonDew Community of Practice, we are excited to introduce a new member-driven activity! Here are two ideas that can help foster more interaction and collaboration, but we need your vote to decide which one to prioritize.
Option 1: CarbonDew Quarterly Talk Series
A series of quarterly talks, sourced from our members, where companies can also showcase their innovations, commitments, and challenges. This structured series will create a platform for knowledge sharing and networking within the community.
Option 2: CarbonDew Monthly Drop-in Hour
A monthly open mic-style event where members can casually join to discuss any topics of interest. This free-form session will provide space for open dialogue, without heavy moderation or coordination.
Have your say!
Please take a minute to cast your vote by filling out this quick survey here. We also invite you to share any additional ideas or feedback and indicate if you'd like to help coordinate these events.
Survey Deadline: October 15, 2024.
Together, we can build a more engaged and collaborative CarbonDew community. Your input matters!
AmeriFlux-NEON-CarbonDew Workshop “Remote Sensing & Fluxes for Real-world Impact”
The AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP), National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and the CarbonDew Community of Practice (CarbonDew) recently hosted a milestone workshop, “Remote Sensing & Fluxes Upscaling for Real-world Impact”, held at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab from July 9-10, 2024. This workshop marked a vital step forward in environmental monitoring, bringing together over 200 registrants, including 100 experts each day in fields ranging from eddy covariance to remote sensing, all with a common goal: to transform cutting-edge research into societal benefits.
Upscaling flux measurements is essential in the broad field of environmental sciences and ecology because these measurements are typically collected at small, localized scales (e.g., an individual ecosystem or flux tower site), but many of the processes they represent—such as carbon, water, and energy exchanges between the land and atmosphere—operate on much larger scales, from regional to global.
Building on discussions from the AGU Fall Meeting 2023 and the AmeriFlux Annual Meeting 2023, the workshop focused on bridging the gap between flux data and remote sensing integration. Participants explored challenges and opportunities related to flux upscaling techniques, data integration methods, and practical applications for real-world impact. A primary goal was to foster collaboration between research and industry sectors, paving the way for advancements in climate solutions, carbon monitoring, and water resource management.
Key outcomes included the development of two upscaling approaches—straight shot and explicit nesting—to address the complexities of scaling data across local, regional, and global scales (Figure 1). These methods will enhance the integration of remote sensing and flux data, enabling the creation of more reliable climate models, emission verification systems, and precision agriculture tools. Participants also identified critical pathways to standardizing methods and improving the accessibility of high-resolution data, ultimately driving greater accountability in net-zero pledges and climate action efforts.
This workshop set a collaborative tone for future activities within the Remote Sensing for Flux Scaling Working Group. Attendees emphasized the importance of continued interdisciplinary engagement, particularly in supporting scalable, actionable science for policy and management decisions.
CarbonDew Library Initiative
We are excited to announce the launch of our new “Library” initiative!
We are now at 70 publications ranging widely in applications of direct flux measurements, from helping design urban vegetation cover in Singapore to oil and gas leak detection in the deserts of Saudi Arabia: https://www.carbondew.org/library.
The project aims to gather all available literature references where direct flux measurements using the eddy covariance technique have been applied for immediate societal benefits.
If you come across any such publications, conference presentations, white papers, websites, etc., we would greatly appreciate it if you could share them with us at founders@carbondew.org.
We kindly ask you to refrain from sending articles that are only hypothetically or philosophically connected to our cause (such as climate modeling, in general, being useful for society, remote sensing ground truthing, in general, being useful for society, knowledge of forest function, in general, being useful for society). We aim to have concrete examples in the “Library” rather than general insights.
While we may expand the accepted methodology to other methods (such as soil chambers and gradient) in the future, for now, we would like to focus on the eddy covariance method.
Exciting Opportunity: Publish with CarbonDew in Peer-Reviewed Journals!
We are thrilled to announce that CarbonDew has been invited to publish a peer-reviewed journal article for free in two prestigious journals: Patterns (Impact Factor: 6.5) and Atmosphere (Impact Factor: 2.3).
This is an incredible opportunity for anyone in the CarbonDew community to lead or co-lead a publication project that could significantly contribute to professional career development. The CarbonDew Founders and Community are ready to provide support, guidance, and contributions along the way.
We are considering crowdsourcing contributions from across our community, with the lead or co-leads serving as moderators and article editors. One idea is to draft an opinion piece, and if you’re looking for a starting point, we are happy to provide the outline of a piece titled: “The Power of Simplicity: Three Fresh Paradigms for Net-Zero Accountability.”
If you have fresh ideas or are eager to take part in this initiative, we would love to hear from you!
Interested in leading or co-leading this initiative? Please email us at founders@carbondew.org.
